Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry, Proteomics and Metabolomics Laboratory

The BIO-MS lab is a Central Facility of Universidad Pablo de Olavide that employs liquid chromatography (nano-LC, UHPLC) and high resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-ORBITRAP and MALDI-TOF) to characterize organic and bimolecular species in samples of biological, environmental or synthecic origin. The facility is oriented towards user’s problems, provideing assistance in the design of optimum workflows for sample treatment and analyte extraction and identification.

Typical types of bioanalysis covered by BIO-MS are the following

– Determination of exact molecular weights of the molecular constituents of complex mixtures, and identification of selected analytes by means of controlled fragmentation.

– Characterization of organic matter in soil and water.

– Fingerprinting and identification of proteins. Sequence determination and location of post translational modifications.

– Determination of lipidomic and metabolomic profiles; search for lipidic biomarkers.

– Bidimensional chemical composition of biological tissues with MALDI-TOF.

Equipment: Ultraflextreme MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer (Bruker-Daltonics), ESI-Triple Quadrupole mass spectrometer (Thermo Fisher), ESI-orbitrap Exactive Focus and Exactive Plus mass spectrometers (Thermo Fisher), nLC micro-liquid and UHPLC chromatography systems (Thermo Fisher).
