Fco. Javier Fernández Roca

Prof. Fco. Javier Fernandez-Roca, Ph.D., History., (Catedrático) Professor of Economic and Business History research work encompasses the 19th and 20th centuries and a range of topics within the field of business history, with a special focus on the history of family businesses. This work has resulted in the production of books, book chapters, and articles published on international and national journals. The candidates production touches on a variety of issues, mainly related to the labor market in general (relationship between institutions, salaries and standard of living, workforce management), or to the agricultural (cotton cooperatives) and industrial (ginning plants) sectors. Always from a business history perspective, he has also studied the patrimony and management of ecclesiastical organizations. Together with F. Elorza, he coordinated a research project on the problems affecting elderly workers that led to the publication of a book (2014) and a book chapter on this topic analyzed through the lens of social and economic history. The candidates participation in research groups coordinated by J. Simpson resulted in a scientific production on business history and, more specifically, on the strategies of family businesses, which included articles published on BH (2007, 2012) and ALhE (2012), as well as a book chapter (2011). As part of a research project on the causes of the Spanish Civil War, Fern<ndez-Roca studied the patrimony of religious orders, economic management of that patrimony and the strategies developed by the orders to avoid the potential expropriation of those assets by the government. The results of this research work were published on E&S (2010), and on a book chapter (2012). His trajectory in business history research has always implied intensive work on accounting sources, and it was only natural that he should get involved in the research projects on accounting history coordinated by F. Gutiérrez. From this connection an interdisciplinary research project emerged focused on the Persistence and longevity of family businesses. This project has generated articles on the longevity of family businesses co-authored with F. Gutiérrez and J. López-Manjón (E&S, 2014; IHE, 2018), and J. Baños (RHI, 2017). Within the same project, the candidate has also addressed the issue of the internationalization of family businesses with J. Baños (RHE, 2017) and on his own (RHE, 2014). In addition, the candidate has coordinated, together with F. Gutiérrez, a monographic issue of the JEBS (2017) on research perspectives on family businesses, which reflected the state of the art in this field. Dr. Fernandez-Roca interest and research work on family businesses have given rise to the signature of research contracts with companies such as Persán and Acesur-Coosur for the retrieval and publication of documentary sources and of the research around them (supra). Previously, the candidate had been actively involved in a research project (2005-2006) that aimed at cataloguing, organizing, consulting and preserving the historical archive of the company Sevillana-Endesa. His academic relationship with M. Cerruti, J. Vidal and C. Dávila has led to his ongoing participation in the Colloquiums of the Ibero-American Group of Business Studies, and his coordination of the groups Third Colloquium in 2007. Through his connection with M. Monsalve and A. Alamaraz, he is in contact with the American research network and has, in fact, co-organized a session on family businesses at the CLADHE (Santiago de Chile, 2019).
