RESILIENT TOURISM Project: New Technologies Applied to the Prevention and Management of Emergencies in Cultural Heritage and Emergency Response in Pandemic Conditions
The RESILIENT TOURISM Project: “New Technologies Applied to the Prevention and Management of Emergencies in Cultural Heritage and Emergency Response in Pandemic Conditions” aims to implement protocols for the preservation of Historical Heritage based on previously developed tools such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Good Management Practices (GMP), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), including pandemic conditions in risk management, to advance effective heritage conservation and strengthen Andalusia as a safe cultural destination.
The project, developed by the Pablo de Olavide University (UPO), in collaboration with the Institut Valencià de Conservació, Restauració i Investigació (IVCR+i), the Illustrious Official College of Graduates and Doctors in Fine Arts of Andalusia, the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage, and the Ministry of Culture and Historical Heritage of the Government of Andalusia, aims to create an innovation ecosystem around heritage tourism to generate and transfer knowledge that can respond to a changing environment in the face of pandemics or potential disasters, promoting new sustainable heritage models that integrate the conservation of heritage from both an economic and environmental perspective.
The target audience for these protocols includes regional/local managers and owners responsible for decision-making, although their impact extends to society as a whole. In this context, decision-making is based on Holistic Preventive Conservation Programmes (HPCP) and Advanced Emergency Response Models (AERM). Through the use of AI, GMP, GIS, and ICT tools, the goal is to develop emergency protocols that contribute to the safeguarding of both movable and immovable heritage and the tourism that visits the heritage sites in our municipalities. To achieve this, a multi-risk scenario approach is included, which overlays the various risks that threaten heritage.
The emergency protocols can be used by heritage management bodies, directly impacting the conservation of heritage assets and the safety of tourists, which in turn has a direct impact on social development by promoting the proper use and enjoyment of heritage as a sociocultural and tourist resource, contributing to the creation of potential job opportunities for conservators/restorers and architects/engineers dedicated to heritage conservation, and reducing costs associated with investing in preventive conservation and emergency preparedness.
