1. Sensor Arrays using Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Optical Detection of Explosive Vapours and Toxic Substances (SALMOS)

Summary: Protecting the society from hazardous gases and explosive materials is an important need that may be addressed if versatile, cheap and user-friendly detection devices are developed. The project SALMOS aims at the development of optical sensors based on photoluminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) processed into films and distributed arrays for the detection of explosives and toxic substances in the gas phase. Enhanced sensing performance will be achieved by using improved approaches for the immobilization or direct growing of the MOF crystals into specific substrates like polymeric matrix membranes or nanostructured metal oxide films. The combination of selected sensitive MOFs assembled into arrays or groups of sensors will enable for selective analyte recognition exploiting their (multi)luminescent response spanning across the visible spectral range. SALMOS will focus on explosive vapours (nitroaromatics, TATP), toxic gases (NO2, SO2) and other toxic volatile organic compounds.

2. Guided Design and Growth of Luminescent Metal Organic Frameworks for the Development of Optical Gas Sensors (MOF-Detect)

Summary: This project pursues the development of new strategies for the design and grow of Luminescent Metal Organic Frameworks (LMOFs) particularly into nanostructures that may facilitate their use and enhance their performance as optical sensors. A strong computational study will be also performed to predict and guide the different approaches. The results of this project may be also applied in many other fields of application of the metal organic frameworks.

4. Adaptive multifunctional nanostructures for advanced optoelectronic monitoring and light driven energy systems (AdFUNC)

Summary: AdFUNC is a highly interdisciplinary project whose main objective is to achieve significant progress in two areas at the frontier of Materials Science: the development of multi-response sensors and light-activated energy systems. The common denominators of AdFUNC are the intelligent design of complex architectures at the nanoscale and the development of laboratory scale demonstrators. We are convinced that the project opens a window of opportunity for us to carry out research that can be classified into four areas: i) Applications and devices: We will develop the recently discovered tribotronic and piezotronic effects to manufacture self-powered sensor devices in combination with several advanced photonic sensing and spectro-electrochemical technologies. Also, photovoltaic devices will be optimized to be able to work in low light conditions, and mechanical energy collectors and devices that are capable of coupling light and movement to the activation of the water electrochemical decomposition. ii) Nanomaterials: 3D nanoarchitectures (nanowires, nanotubes, core@shell) and materials with controlled nanoporous structures (sculptural layers, nanochannels, porous optical multilayers, metalloorganic networks MOFs). iii) Strategy: new synthetic routes, advanced characterization of materials and properties, integration of materials into devices, while simultaneously obtaining modeling and simulation information. iv) Perspective of scalability: methods and techniques compatible with established industrial processes will be used, such as plasma and vacuum, typical of the optoelectronic and microelectronic industry, and synthesis processes in solution.
