Manuel Herrero Sánchez

Project Director

Manuel Herrero Sánchez is Assistant Professor of the Early Modern History Unit at the Department of Geography, History and Philosophy at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville (UPO).

He holds a PhD of the European University Institute in Florence and taught as a research fellow at the Istituto Benedetto Croce of Naples, the Leiden Center for the History of European Expansion (IGEER), the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, Liège University, Complutense University of Madrid and at the Institute of History (CSIC) in Madrid. He is UPO’s coordinator for the Master Européen en Histoire Politique et culturelle du Moyen Âge à l’époque contemporaine.

A specialist in the History of International Relation during the XVIth and XVIIth centuries, his research interests focus on the comparative approach to the history of the mercantile republics of the Netherlands and Genoa, and on the complex constitution of the Hispanic Monarchy, Europe’s first transnational and global empire. Other areas of research include Atlantic History, models of European expansion and foreign communities in the Possessions of the Spanish Monarchy. He is involved in several research projects financed by the Spanish Government (The role of European republics in the formation of the modern state. Modernising alternative or driving force of the system?) and by the Major Collaborative Research Initiatives Grant of the SSHRC, Canada (Hispanic Baroque Project de la Universidad de Western Ontario).

Klemens Kaps

 Klemens Kaps is post-doc researcher at the Early Modern History Unit at the Department of Geography, History and Philosophy at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville (UPO). He obtained his Ph.D. from Vienna University in 2011 with a thesis on trade, economic development and modernization discourses in Habsburg Galicia between 1772 and 1914 and worked as research assistant and lecturer at the Departments for Eastern European History and for Social and Economic History of the University of Vienna.

His research interests focus on the economic and social history of the Habsburg Monarchy in the 18th and 19th centuries with special attention to economic development, external and internal trade, economic policy and modernization discourses with special attention to social and cultural stereotypes. His current research focuses merchant networks that mediated trade between Habsburg Central Europe and the Spanish Empire in the 18th century.

He is member of the international Research Project “The role of European republics in the formation of the modern state” directed by Manuel Herrero Sánchez.
