Abstract: How do innovative spaces influence urban development? The scenes approach sustains that cultural context of places, as scenes, is an important factor explaining urban life and urban change. The conference presents three main explanatory mechanisms in order to explain the influence of innovative scenes on urban change and urban life. These mechanisms are applied to analyze urban change in Spanish cities and their neighborhoods (1991-2001), the impact of innovative scenes on individual life-styles, and the role of scenes on urban segregation in Spanish cities up to 100000 inhabitants.
