Jose M. Escribano-Páez is a specialist in the frontiers of the Spanish Empire in Europe and the Mediterranean World. He got his BA (2008) and his Diploma of Advanced Studies (2011) at the University of Alcalá (Spain). Later on, he entered the doctoral program of the European University Institute (Florence). His PhD dissertation (defended in 2016) analysed the shaping of frontier political spaces in the European and Mediterranean territories of the Spanish Empire during the first half of the sixteenth century. Departing from this core focus, his research has evolved in different directions and materialized in articles on cross-cultural interaction, violence and diplomacy in the Ibero-Maghrebi frontier (Itinerario 2016 and Historia Social 2017) and his recent monograph Juan Rena and the Frontiers of Spanish Empire (1500-1540) (New York, Routledge, 2020). In the framework of his ongoing project, he is expanding his research horizons to address the inner workings of cross-cultural violence and its restraint in the frontiers of the Iberian empires in maritime Southeast Asia (Diplomatica 2020). Before joining the Universidad Pablo de Olavide he has been teaching fellow in Early Modern Global History at the University of Warwick (2017/2018), Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral researcher (2018), and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow (2018/2020).
