NOTE: The time series has been updated with respect to that published in the above reference. This update used ICOADs v2.5 dataset instead of CLIWOC v1.5 and ICOADs v2.1 datasets (1851-2008) that were used therein. DESCRIPTION: The WI is an instrumental-based monthly index of the atmospheric circulation variability over the North Atlantic since 1685, and a valuable indicator of the European climate. It is defined as the proportion of westerly days per month (in % with respect to the total number of available days for each month) over the English Chanel. A westerly day is defined as a day with prevailing wind from the west (wind blowing from between 225º and 315º from true north). When only one daily observation was available, the day was classified from the wind direction of that single observation. If several observations per day were available over the English Channel, a westerly wind day was said to occur when at least a percentage of 42% of the total number of observations of that day corresponded to westerly wind.
