Resumen

La cuestión de la economía política del turismo y su relación con la acumulación de capital se ha vuelto cada vez más evidente. Desde sus orígenes como un esfuerzo tecnocrático y aplicado hasta su consolidación como un campo de estudio teóricamente más riguroso y diverso, este artículo analiza las distintas teorías y escuelas de pensamiento que han dado forma a la subdisciplina emergente de la economía política del turismo. El trabajo sostiene que, si bien la economía política del turismo se ha enriquecido con diversas contribuciones académicas de todas las ciencias sociales, al mismo tiempo ha tenido dificultades para identificar y consolidar su enfoque epistemológico y teórico único y conectarse con la literatura más amplia sobre economía política. En consecuencia, el artículo defiende una economía política radical del turismo como aquella que ofrece las herramientas analíticas más eficaces para abordar y comprender mejor la creciente complejidad y el alcance del capitalismo turístico en una época de crisis crónica y polarización.

Raoul Bianchi, Universidad Metropolitana de Mánchester

Raoul Bianchi es profesor titular de Economía Política en la Universidad Metropolitana de Mánchester. Su investigación se centra en las Islas Canarias, España y el Mediterráneo, y ha publicado numerosos trabajos sobre antropología, política y economía política del turismo. Es editor asociado de Annals of Tourism Research y forma parte de varios consejos editoriales. Anteriormente, ha sido activista en favor de un turismo equitativo y justo y ha formado parte del consejo ejecutivo de la antigua ONG británica Tourism Concern (1997-2003).
