Abstract

This study analyzes the important role played by the romantic magazine El Artista in the early years of the reign of Isabel II as the valuation of Murillo and Velázquez. Considered in its own right a pioneer in its field, this publication strove to emulate in its passionate defense of Romanticism to their foreign counterparts, especially the french L’Artiste. However, this positioning did not prevent that El Artista show a deep admiration for the spanish painting of the Golden Age. Due largely to the accent that was put in the Spain of Isabel II in the intrinsically spanish, both Velázquez and Murillo drew the attention of El Artista, dedicating a series of texts that we will analyze with particular attention to the developments in the Spain of Isabel II by critical fortune of both painters.
