Abstract

Urban art, in its different facets, constitutes one of the most dynamic contemporary languages. Its most recent modality is born from an institutionalization process that has reached significant levels. Today, the heritagization of urban art requires a definition and characterization that allow us to address the central question of its protection. Based on the reconstruction of the art scene in the Italian region of Tuscany, the question of art in public spaces is approached from three perspectives: the presence of art in the city, the possibility of using contemporary art as an economic and social mechanism, and the reality of cultural policy. This research establishes the relationships between distinct manifestations of urban art that have emerged in an institutional framework, as a foundation to highlight the key issues of their preventative conservation.
