Scope and policy

Atrio. Revista de Historia del Arte, with e-ISSN: 2659-5230, is an annual scientific journal ascribed to the Area of Art History of the Department of Geography, History and Philosophy of the Universidad Pablo de Olavide. It was founded in 1988, with ISSN 0214-8293, with the aim of publishing original, unreleased and relevant research (that has not been presented simultaneously in any other publication) on cultural heritage and art history, with historical, critical, aesthetic analysis, etc., in any field and period, both in Spain and Latin America.

The journal is aimed at the community of researchers, teachers and scholars of these disciplines with the purpose of bringing knowledge, promoting the creation of participation networks and collaborating in the dissemination of the growing number of original research results, theoretical studies, short communications, etc., which are carried out in our country and in the international Ibero-American sphere on the aforementioned subjects. All of the above is done without losing sight of the creative processes and cultural events in a broad chronological framework, up to the present day, with an equal interest in contemporary creation and new historiographical trends.

It is an electronic, open access, plural publication, open to reflection and debate on the aforementioned topics, whose articles are evaluated by the double-anonymized peer review system (reviews will not be evaluated by reviewers and the chapters for monograph will be adapted to the rules for the submission and evaluation of articles). In addition, Atrio does not charge any kind of cost for the submission, publication or dissemination of articles.

Atrio. Revista de Historia del Arte accepts contributions signed by one or more authors and written in Spanish, English, French, Italian or Portuguese by researchers from different institutions or in a personal capacity, according to the following typologies:

  • Research articles.
  • Bibliographical reviews.
  • In addition, chapters for monographs are published independently of the journal.

EVALUATION

1. The editorial board will carry out a review to ensure that the article: complies with the style standards indicated by the journal; conforms to the thematic lines of the journal; does not incur in plagiarism of any kind and that the content is appropriate, original and relevant.

  • 1.1. The editorial board will notify the author in case the article needs to be reviewed to conform to the style guidelines.
  • 1.2. Authors will have one week to make the appropriate changes.
  • 1.3. If no corrections are needed, the author will also be notified of the status of their text.
  • 1.4. For the articles to continue with the evaluation process, it is essential that they comply with the style guidelines indicated on the website.

2. In the following process, two reviewers will evaluate the article using the double-anonymized peer review system and will fill in the original evaluation form (click to download form). See guidelines for reviewers.

  • 2.1. The reviewers will have a period of one month to evaluate the assigned article
  • 2.2. In the event that both reviewers do not agree on the scientific quality of the text, the report of a third specialist will be required.
  • 2.3. These reviewers' evaluations will be anonymous, both for the author and the reviewer.

ACCEPTANCE OR REJECTION

3. Upon completion of the evaluations, the reviewers will recommend publication (specifying the corrections or revisions to be made) or rejection of the manuscript.

  • 3.1. Once the evaluation process finishes, authors will be notified of the reviewers' decision.

If the publication is accepted by two reviewers and corrections and/or revisions are required, the authors will be notified so that they can make the changes indicated by the reviewers in the evaluation template within a maximum period of ten daysHere you have a guide on how to resubmit the text after the indicated changes have been made.
  • 3.5. Within ten days, the author must return the text with the changes made highlighted in a different color and without exceeding the maximum of 15 pages. If the author does not carry out any of the changes requested, they must inform of the reasons for this decision. The editorial board will be in charge of revising these corrections.
  • 3.6. An article will be rejected if in the second round of review it is not fully accepted for publication by reviewers

EDITION

4. The final decision on whether to accept articles for publication or not will rest with the editorial board.

  • 4.1. Once an article is accepted for publication, the editors may make minor modifications, without altering the content, to correct mechanical or linguistic errors.
  • 4.2. If such changes affect the content, the authors will be consulted for approval.

5. After the formatting of each article, the authors will receive the first print-proofs and will have a maximum period of five days to make corrections, exclusively of typos. If there is no response from the authors, the journal will publish the article without modifying the edited version.

Authors are thanked in advance for complying with these rules in order to speed up the evaluation and editing process.

Guidelines for reviewers

The reviewers, always avoiding possible conflicts of interest that may arise when reviewing each article, will abide by confidentiality towards the author and the evaluated work and by objectivity in their arguments, judgements and observations.

The reviewer will have a period of one month to evaluate the article assigned to them. To do so, they will have to issue their report through the OJS platform (see here the guide with the steps to follow in order to evaluate an article), assessing, based on four grades (very good, good, fair or poor) fourteen different sections that evaluate the quality of the work, its suitability and relevance.

After indicating the comments justifying your decision and making the appropriate corrections, you will have to choose between one of the following options: accept (the article is accepted for publication with no changes required), publishable with modifications (the article is accepted for publication, but the author will be asked to make a number of changes), resubmit for review (the reviewer considers that relevant changes are required, which will have to be made by the author and then a further round of peer reviewing), resubmit for another journal (the reviewer considers that the text does not comply with the journal's policy and recommends that it be sent to another journal) and unpublishable (the submission has not passed peer review and is not recommended for publication in the journal).

If you need to consult the review form that we use in the platform, you can do it through the following link: Download Review Form.

These evaluations will be anonymous, both for authors and reviewers. Periodically, the editorial board will publish in the journal a list of the reviewers who participate in the manuscript evaluation process and who have provided authorization for their participation in the evaluation process of the articles for Atrio. Journal of Art History to be made public. In addition, the names of the reviewers will also be published on the website. Click here to access the list of reviewers.

Consult here the guide with the steps to follow to evaluate an article and if you do not remember your password, read this guide to find out how to reset it.

Editorial practices regarding Gender Equality

The journal will report on whether the source data of the research is gender-sensitive, and whether this is adequately reflected in order to allow the identification of possible differences.

The use of inclusive language is requested (Gabe, M. (2010). ¿Cómo dices? Guía para una comunicación con Equidad de Género. https://www.mugarikgabe.org/). For example

  • Alternate the order, because it defines power, do not invariably indicate boys and girls, but also girls and boys.
  • Emphasize gender when dealing with topics/roles that are not usually female or male.
  • Use metonymic terms (a figure of speech that substitutes the generic masculine for the profession, position, place, etc.).
  • Giving the same treatment to women and men, without asymmetries. Avoid referring to women only by their proper name or with diminutives if in the same context this is not done with men.

Exemption from liability and transfer of rights

The author or licensor of the material submitted for publication authorizes the journal Atrio to publish, without any obligation whatsoever (financial or otherwise), the content of the manuscript in paper, digital format, or in any other medium. This transfer of use of the material submitted includes all the rights necessary for its publication in the journal. At the same time, the moral rights of the author are guaranteed.

The author or licensor is fully aware and agrees that all or any of the content provided will form a work whose use is ceded to Atrio for publication in whole or in part.

The author or licensor guarantees that they are the owner of the intellectual property rights (IPR) over the contents provided, that is, over the text itself and the images/photographs/photographic works incorporated in his/her article.

In doing so, the author or licensor warrants and guarantees: (i) that all material submitted to Atrio magazine complies with the applicable legal provisions; (ii) that the use of any material protected by copyright and personal rights in the conception of the material is regularized; (iii) that they obtained the necessary rights licenses, permissions and authorizations for the execution of the material, including image rights, if applicable; and (iv) that the material does not violate third party rights, including, but not limited to, copyright and personal rights.

The author or licensor exempts Atrio magazine from any and all liability for copyright infringement. Thereby, the author must in every way undertake to assist the journal in the defense of any accusation, extrajudicial and/or judicial measures. Likewise, they assume the payment of any amount or compensation that the magazine has to pay to third parties for the breach of these obligations, whether by judicial, arbitration and/or administrative decision.

Copyright and publication ethics policies

Regarding copyright

Authors who have published in Atrio. Revista de Historia del Arte will preserve copyright and will guarantee the journal the right of first publication of their work. Simultaneously, the published work will be subject to the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License that allows third parties to share the work as long as both the author and the fact that the work has been published in the journal are mentioned.

In case of co-authorship, authors must specify to the journal the level of contribution in each phase of both the research and writing process. In order to do this, it is recommended to follow the CRediT taxonomy (https://casrai.org/credit/).

Regarding plagiarism and fraud policy

The author or licensor exempts the journal from any liability for copyright infringement. Thereby, the author must in every way undertake to assist the journal in the defence of any accusation, extrajudicial and/or judicial measures.

The journal uses the SafeAssign tool to ensure the following policy in order to detect fraud and plagiarism and to manage claims. To this end, SafeAssign will analyze every submission received by the platform in order to determine the percentage of coincidence regarding other publications.  The editorial board will examine the report provided by SafeAssign and will determine whether the article should continue with the editorial process or not. Should plagiarism is detected, the author will be informed.

Plagiarism is understood as the use of ideas, words, works or data of another person without being correctly cited. Furthermore, the falsification of data and the act against copyright and intellectual property rights will be considered as scientific fraud.

Regarding ethical statement

On authorship and contributions
Everyone can have access to the submission guidelines. Authors will preserve their copyright and will be responsible for their content, along with guaranteeing the journal the right of first publication of their work.
Papers will go through a double-anonymized peer review process and the final decision will be taken by the editorial board. The editorial board will also be able to reject papers without resorting to external evaluation in case they do not meet minimum quality standards, do not meet journal’s objective or contain plagiarism.

On handling complaints, claims and appeals
Complaints, claims and appeals will be dealt with within the editorial board. The members will study the evidence, try to solve each specific case and propose, if necessary, evaluators following a double-anonymized peer review system. The results and communications throughout the process will be made through the journal’s e-mail.

On conflicts of interests / competing interest
Both the members of the editorial board and the reviewers will refrain from handling or reviewing a paper if there is any kind of interest towards the author (personal or work relations).

On data sharing and reproducibility
Papers submitted to Atrio must be the result of original research, indicating when the ideas belong to a previously published work. Authors are responsible for not inventing, copying, manipulating or distorting the data presented in their investigation as plagiarism, in any form, constitutes serious ethical misconduct. Should this happen, the editorial board will take action as it deems appropriate.
If an article is signed by several authors, the acknowledgement of every author and their responsibility for the work must be guaranteed. Furthermore, authors must cite the source of the graphic material and have the necessary reproduction permissions, as well as they must indicate the funding sources that have made the studio possible. Published articles will be available on the journal’s webpage and will be licensed under Creative Commons.

On ethical oversight
Authors of papers submitted to Atrio must guarantee that they are their own, original and unpublished work, failing which the journal will take action as it deems appropriate.
Reviewers must understand that they are working with a confidential document and may not disseminate or use its information. Their role will be to judge objectively and disinterestedly the sections indicated in the evaluation form within the stipulated deadline (see guidelines for reviewers), as well as to indicate if they detect any similarity, plagiarism, falsification, etc. regarding other works.

On intellectual property
Authors must preserve their copyright and the journal undertakes to respect their intellectual property at all times by indicating it when necessary. The editorial board will be in charge of avoiding malpractice and managing the reception, evaluation and editing of articles in an impartial and confidential manner, as well as respecting intellectual independence.

On the management of post-publication discussions and corrections
The editorial board is always at the disposal of the authors for any post-publication editorial discussion and to consider the necessary corrections.

For the above reasons, Atrio. Revista de Historia del Arte undertakes to meet every criteria established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Errata, Corrections and Retractions Policy

The correction, retraction or elimination of articles already published in Atrio. Revista de Historia del Arte will only be done exceptionally and after being studied and approved by the journal's editorial team. The rules recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) will be followed.

The policy of Atrio. Revista de Historia del Arte with respect to the correction, retraction and elimination of articles seeks to guarantee transparency and the maximum guarantee in the process. To this end, we distinguish between:

  • Errata: minor and simple changes that do not affect the content of the article or its research results, whether committed by the authors or by the editorial team.
  • Retractions: are serious and significant changes that affect in a relevant way the content and results of the paper, as well as misconduct in research, writing or publication. Following the indications of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the following are considered retractions: important errors, falsifications, plagiarism, redundant publication, use of materials without permission, infringements of copyright or ethical codes, or when the peer review process has been compromised and there is a conflict of interest.

In both cases, the authors should inform the journal through the e-mail atrio@upo.es sending a justification explaining the reasons and the new version of the paper in which the modifications are indicated. The editorial team will consider, according to the relevance of the changes, whether the paper should be re-evaluated. Once the change and/or retraction has been accepted, the editorial team will publish an announcement on the web site indicating such circumstances and informing about the errors and modifications. In addition, a list of errata, corrections or retractions will be published in the following issue, indicating the title of the article, the error and the correction. If important changes are to be made to the work, a new version of the article will be published and reference will be made to the modifications. In the case of a retraction, a watermark will also be added to the paper indicating "article retracted", words that will also appear in the title.

Finally, a paper may be eliminated if very serious problems are found in its content that cannot be solved by the above measures or for legal and juridical reasons. In these cases, the metadata of the articles will be maintained, but the text will be replaced by a document explaining its new status.
