Abstract

Collecting and creating personal archives among Sephardic intellectuals is a modern phenomenon in the field of material culture. This process, which began among the Sephardim only at the end of the 19th century, is a direct consequence of the impact of the Jewish Enlightenment, the Haskala, on the importance of testimony and self-documentation. This article will focus on the description and analysis of the Perahiá Archive kept in the Ben-Zvi Library in Jerusalem. This case study which counts with a significant corpus allows us to reflect on the documentary self-awareness of the Sephardim in the modern period and may offer a research model to analyse other personal archives.
