Circular Migration and the International Development of Sun-and-Beach Tourism

Based on the analysis of the main sun-and-beach tourist areas in the world—namely the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia—this article examines the role of circular migration during the formation processes of tourist destinations. The findings indicate that these migrations have played a key role in the radical transformation of tourist areas, with varying implications for the economic and social development of these regions. The characteristics of these migratory flows suggest the need for a specific approach from the perspective of public policy, aimed at improving the social integration and mobility of these migrants and achieving greater social cohesion. Furthermore, the study emphasises the importance of including the differential impact of these often-overlooked migrations in the socio-economic analyses of tourism development.
