Abstract

Recent monetary and financial turmoil have stimulated the debates about the possibility of reforming the international monetary system (IMS). The objective of this paper is to analyse the viability and potential effects of the proposals that consider that the best option consists of a transition to a new IMS, based on a global currency. This transition could begin with an evolution towards a regional-multipolar regime (first scenario) or promoting directly an IMS based on a supranational currency. This currency could be a currency basket (second scenario) or an international commodity reserve currency (third scenario).
