Abstract

This paper explores the impact of five new sources recorded in the work of the painters Juan de Sevilla and Alonso Cano from Granada. Both artists drew on the same engraving by Paul Pontius, The Mystical Marriage of the Blessed Hermann Joseph, based on a composition of Van Dyck’s, for their own paintings: The Betrothal of the Virgin by Juan de Sevilla, from the Convent of St. Anton of Granada, and Cano’s Vision of St John the Evangelist, from the Wallace Collection in London, part of the now lost altarpiece from the Convent of St Paula in Seville.
