Creative social intervention with women in situations of sex trafficking

This article presents Agency and Resistance through Theatre (ART), a social intervention methodology based on the Theatre of the Oppressed (TO), designed to work with migrant women in situations of sexual trafficking. From a critical human rights perspective, it questions the lack of recognition of the voices of these women in public policies and care systems, which tend to reproduce paternalistic approaches. In response, we propose the use of theatrical practices as transformative tools that allow for the reconstruction of memory, the re-signification of identity and the promotion of collective and political action in safe, expressive and collaborative spaces. The proposed methodology is organised in three complementary phases: receptive perception of the self, through creative corporeality; re-identification, based on antagonistic self-determination; and re-signification, through the development of expressive and critical capacities. These stages stimulate three fundamental dimensions for empowerment and social transformation: recognition, resistance and claiming rights. The process promotes the participation of migrant women to influence hegemonic narratives. Finally, it emphasises the need for ethical and critical training for its implementation, positioning ART as a pedagogical, therapeutic and emancipatory tool in contexts of high vulnerability.
