Living in the containment frontier
dynamics and experiences of sex work in the border city of Tapachula, Chiapas

This article analyzes urban transformations and sex work dynamics in Tapachula, Chiapas, through a bodily reading of the border. Based on ethnographic research conducted between 2014 and 2023, it examines the trajectories of migrant women, men, and LGBTQ+ individuals who, faced with border containment and economic precarity, turn sex work into a strategy of survival and mobility. Tapachula, transformed into a containment frontier by Mexican migration policies, has generated new erotic cartographies where the body becomes a means of subsistence, a site of control, and an expression of agency. The study highlights how gender, nationality, and racial hierarchies shape sexual markets and reinforce migrants’ vulnerability while also revealing their adaptive capacity in contexts of structural exclusion.
