The global financial crisis started in 2008 has caused the last –and it seems the final one– attack to Welfare State and its benefits. It makes sense in this context talking about basic income, an unconditional and universal income that it would be given to each member of the political community? Is basic income a provocation when States have not wealth to pay the most basic services? Which role basic income could play in 21st century? In this paper, basic income will be studied from a consequentialist perspective, studying its role in labor market and in the stimulation of democracy. Basic income is not the solution to the crisis, but it can help to build a new model of work and democracy.
