Abstract

In Plato’s allegory of the cave, sun and fire refer to two diverse
ontological levels and, at the same time, to two forms of luminosity: the light
of the sun, realm of visibility of the intelligible, and the light of fire, realm
of visibility of the sensible. The aim of this article is to analyse the tension
between two lights and two sights –the one from the eye of the soul and the
one from the eye of the body–, as presented by Plato in Republic VI and VII
within the framework of his theory of education.
