This paper analyzes the conflict between the Chiquito and Guaycurú Indians that took place from 1763 to 1793 at the frontier between the Portuguese and Spanish empires. I examine evidence from the government of Chiquitos and information from Paraguay and Mato Grosso, in order to define the causes, cycles and progression of the war. The analysis considers the characteristics of native warfare as well as the context of the frontier dispute between the two colonial empires where the inter-indigenous took place. It also points out its sociological consequences on both sides of the border, and the impact of the war on inter-ethnic relations on the Upper Paraguay River towards the end of the Colonial period.
