Repression and Punishment: Violence in the Guerrilla Zone of the Valleys of La Paz and Cochabamba during the War of Independence.

The war of independence of what is now Bolivia, offered a space for the development of violence. Both the insurgent and royalist sides used this means to repress and punish those who opposed them, showing that both sides participated in cruel acts. In this article we will see certain scenes of extreme violence that happened in this period of time in the guerrilla space of the Valleys of La Paz and Cochabamba, described in the diary of José Santos Vargas. In this document, there are many scenes of soldiers or guerrillas in the different confrontations. However, we will concentrate and analyze those that had women, children and animals as the object of violence, considering that they were innocent targets of a conflict that ultimately led to the birth of a new Republic.
