Abstract

One of the main Renaissance-era architectural works in Jerez is the Riquelme Palace. Constructed between 1542 and 1543 by the Portuguese architect Fernando Álvarez, it is one of the first works of its style, in which the influence of the Renaissance style Seville Town Hall is clearly visible. This article will analyze the building’s construction process, its relationship with other architectural works in Jerez of the same time period, and its dependence on the aforementioned building in Seville. Moreover, emphasis will be placed on the life of the building’s contractor, the noble Hernán Riquel of Jerez. His hopes to create a work of grandeur and modernity were mitigated by economic ruin, which ultimately resulted in the incompletion of his “classical” styledpalace.
