Abstract

The sculptural group of the Insignia de la Cruz, popularly known as “la Diablesa”, made in 1695 by the sculptor of Strasbourg, Nicolas de Bussy, is one of the most significant examples of allegorical works linked to Holy Week in Spain and Hispanic America. The analysis of the piece from the processional side as a religious function for which it was designed refers us to processional steps such as “La Canina” in Seville, the passage from “La Muerte” in Zaragoza or “El Arquero de la Muerte” in Lima (Peru). This perspective allows us to delve deeper into its meaning, its complex symbolism, the motivation for which it was created and the mentality of Spanish Baroque society.
