Abstract

This essays addresses the comparative analysis of the differences and similarities of two great representatives of the Italian modern political theory, Donato Giannotti y Nichola Machievelli. The latter one deals with aspects not examined in the former one's writings as the double moral standards of rulers and the antagonistic relationship between virtue and fortune. Both do however reflect on their work coincidental opinions on different issues: the perverse nature of human condition, the value of history as method of knowledge of customs, and the Republic's protective militia. On a general plane, both agree on the conditions for a well constructed and lasting Republic: internal protection grounded on the existence of good and respected laws and the external protection by means of an own militia.
