Abstract

Cultural transfers that existed between Spain and America had the devotions as one of its main vehicles. By these devotions, their material and inmaterial manifestations, images, manufacturing techniques, and the authors, among others travelled between the worlds to either root or transform until these transfers became the builiding blocks that reinforced their own identities.

One of the dedications that arrived from Spain to the New World was to the Holy Mary of Monserrat. This image rooted in the capital of the Nueva Granada, Santafé today Bogotá, and prompted a series of events upon its arrival: the construction of a shrine and the effort to found an order devoted only to its care, among others. The image of the Holy Mary of Monserrat transformed over the centuries generating the genesis of a new local image, a Christ nailed to the cross and fallen to theflogging, known as the Lord of Monserrate. To this day, this is the most important fervor of the city. Around this new image magical stories were created and recreated that have survived oblivion and made it one of the foundations of the city’s identity and a fundamental part of its heritage.
