The Napoleonic prey of archaeological piezas and works of art of Rome and Italy through the iconography 1796-1816

Abstract

With the Napoleonic conquest, France will plunder of objects archaeological and works of art for the Louvre-Muséum Central des Arts, then Napoleon Museum, which was conceived as a Universal Museum in the service of Paris, capital of the new empire and successor of Rome. Napoleonic France wanted to deprive Rome of that status in the perspective of being the nation of freedom in the face of the theocratic despotism of the Holy See. With the fall of Napoleon when the pope returns and the looted pieces are returned, Italy will no longer be the same. We will witness the emergence of a national regeneration based on state unity, which will be known as the Risorgimento. The feeling will become tangible in the recovery of lost heritage, which will be considered national and subject to greater legal protection as the exemplary Editto Pacca of 1822, promoted by Pius VII. All these vicissitudes have been translated into a rich iconography of which in this article we present a sample.

Author Biography

Javier Verdugo Santos, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, España

Javier Verdugo Santos is a Heritage Conservation Specialist/Archaeologist. He graduated with a Doctorate in Archaeology from the University of Huelva (UHU) and holds a degree in Public Law and degree in Geography and History from the University of Seville (USE). He is a member of the Heritage Observatory at ICOMOS-Spain. He has worked in the public sphere in the management and protection of historical heritage in Andalusia, in leadership positions such as the Director of the Archaeological Site of Itálica (Seville) and Coordinator of the Network of Cultural Spaces of Andalusia (RECA). He coordinated the Strategic Plan of the Punic-Mauritanian city of Tamuda (Tetouan, Morocco) between 2008-2018. He is a member of the “Vrbanitas. Archaeology and Heritage” research group at the University of Huelva and of  the “Archaeology and Photography: The History of Archaeology in Spain” research group at the Autonomous University of Madrid.
