The role of strain and negative emotions in illicit behaviors associated with sports contest
An empirical study with a sample of active athletes

In this study we evaluate the possible underlying causes of certain infractions in sport contests. We take strain theories as theoretical framework. These theories, in their classic versions, predict that the lack of opportunities some people face are the causes of certain deviant behaviours. However, contemporary versions of strain theories maintain that the relationship between strain and deviance is indirect. That is, through certain negative emotions (Agnew 1992). This study uses data from a survey of active athletes (n=349) that provides information on negative emotions. A factorial analysis reveals two latent variables that depict negative emotions that appear respectively before and after the competition. A set of mediation analysis with the PROCESS tool Version 3.4.1 (Hayes 2018) reports that only negative emotions after the competition have mediating effects. The results are analysed and discussed.
