Abstract

El Aguador de Sevilla is a work by its author as a masterpiece, evidencing the artist’s efficiency and skill in all the factors which determine, both technically and historically, the process of execution of the painting. But, first and foremost, El Aguador embodies such virtues as prudence and temperance –universal concepts encoded in the work. It is thus an ideal, and at the same time, objetives depiction of psychological characteristc, resulting from the author’s great interest in human physiognomy and its relation to body humours, a subject so popular at the time with authors as G.B. della Porta or Huarte de San Juan.
