Abstract

The Fine Arts are ubiqutuous in the works of San Juan de la Cruz. Continuous references to the arts show a throughout knowledge both of artistic techniques and the doctrinal value of the arts that the precepts of Trent held. However, contemplation and knowledge of divinity, the absoluteness of experience in the mystic spiritual encounter implies the neglect for imagery. Images become a hurdle to the soul. Iconic abstraction, in a way a negation of the sensual world, can lead to nothing but a nihilistic attitude to the outer world.
