The aim of this work is that of contributing to foster the knowledge of the Latin American political culture and its low Republican intensity. In Latin American countries, the formally Republican political regimes coexist with socially institutionalised patronage systems and corrupt practices. Such coexistence produces a symbolic dislocation that endangers legitimacy. Reasonable constructions become indispensable in order to generate -at the imaginary level democratic fictions to serve the exercise of these ways of dominance. One way of doing this is by having recourse to -Republican cynicism-, otherwise, discursive practices that deconstruct or simulate the Republican principles of the symbolic order so as to legitimise particularistic forms of political behaviour.
