Abstract

This article analyses ritual practices in women’s football. It explores, describes and sequences the forms of group ritual elaboration and innovation in two professional women’s football clubs of the Spanish First Division (Liga F), Athletic de Bilbao and Unión Deportiva Tenerife. Both clubs are very different in structure, trajectory and representativeness, more in the case of Athletic and less in the case of Tenerife. Each club represents one of the two main paradigms of historical, structural and institutional models in women’s football in Spain. This allowed us to broaden the perspective, in terms of gender, and complement our approach to sporting rituals in women's football. Methodologically, we relied on the discursive analysis derived from six in-depth qualitative interviews conducted with players from both clubs. With the voices of the protagonists we elaborated the characteristics of their ritual structures. This allowed us to confirm the importance and full incorporation of women into the ritual dynamics characteristic of the sports world, as well as certain resignifications and displacements of ritual from the sacred to the secular.
